Morawa Business Enterprise Centre Receives Major Regional Funds
The construction phase of a $1.2 million Morawa Community and Business Enterprise Centre will proceed, following the announcement of a $340,888 Royalties for Regions grant to the Shire of Morawa this week.
The complex, to be located on the Wubin-Mullewa Rd to the south of Morawa, will comprise of eight light industrial and commercial business units and a central administration centre, and will facilitate small business expansion into the region to serve mining and allied industries.
Shire CEO Gavin Treasure welcomed the announcement and said the Centre would be a major asset to the region.
“Through consultation with mining bodies, potential business entrants into the region and training organisations, the Shire had identified the need to establish infrastructure that supported the premise to buy locally,” Mr Treasure said.
“The Business Enterprise Centre will ideally position local trades to take advantage of the Buy Local Policies established with Gindalbie Metals and Sinosteel Midwest Corporation, as well as create new employment, education and training opportunities.”
Shire President Jim Cook said an increased small business presence in Morawa would lead to greater industry diversity, build a more sustainable community and buffer the region against the ups and downs of the agricultural sector.
“With this increase in economic activity will come more local service offerings and population growth,” Mr Cook said.
“This is an important step in regional development and strengthens our case that the area can support the surrounding mining community.”
The Shire anticipates releasing construction tenders in the very near future, with completion due March 2010.
Businesses interested in establishing themselves in Morawa are urged to contact Shire of Morawa CEO Gavin Treasure or Economic Development Officer Debbie McIllraith on 9971 1204 or edo@morawa.wa.gov.au.
Funding for the project has also been received from the Shire of Morawa, Mid West Development Commission and the Morawa Community Trust, a Sinosteel Midwest Corporation initiative.
